History of Yan Jing

Ancient Salt Producer

Yan Jing has been producing salt for more than a millennia, harvesting salt from deposits deep in the mountains by means of wells (For Details, Click Here). This small village nestled amongst the mountains has been a key part of the greater Asian salt industry for the past 1400 years, supplying surrounding regions and nations with salt since the days of the Silk Road.

Tea Horse Road

The salt from the town of Yan Jing (literally meaning “salt well”) has been a passenger on many an ancient Tibetan caravan; traded for tea, horses, and other goods on ancient routes over a thousand years ago. One of the most notable trade routes Yan Jing has belonged to is the “Tea Horse Road,” an ancient trade route also known as the “Southern Silk Road” that connected southwest China with Southeast Asia from 618AD until the arrival of modern roads just a few decades ago.
