Tibetan vs Himalayan Salt

Everyday Differences:

Tibetan salt (left) comes in flakes, Himalayan salt (right) comes in pebbles. Tibetan salt flakes are much easier to hand grind than Himalayan salt pebbles; In fact, Tibetan salt often doesn’t need to be ground at all. Both are beautiful, but flakes are more practical than pebbles. For more on how to use Tibetan Salt, click here.

Origin:

Tibetan salt comes from the mountains on the Eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Himalayan salt comes from the western end of the Himalayas in Pakistan.

Extraction:

Himalayan Salt Mine in Pakistan
Tibetan Salt fields in Yan Jing

Tibetan salt is scraped from salt fields in layers after brine from salt wells is evaporated away. Himalayan salt is mined out of the ground in Pakistan. This is why Tibetan salt comes in flakes and Himalayan salt comes in big chunks or smaller pebbles broken down from bigger chunks.
